Recurrent Nosebleeds

Recurrent Nosebleeds Treatment

Recurrent nosebleeds, also known as frequent epistaxis, occur when bleeding from the nose happens repeatedly over time. The nose contains many small blood vessels that can easily rupture due to dryness, irritation, infections, or injury. While occasional nosebleeds are common and usually harmless, frequent episodes may indicate an underlying condition that requires medical evaluation and proper treatment.

  1. Common Causes of Recurrent Nosebleeds:
    • Dry Air: Dry climates or excessive use of air conditioning can dry the nasal lining.
    • Nasal Injury: Nose picking, trauma, or frequent blowing of the nose.
    • Allergies and Infections: Inflammation caused by allergies or sinus infections.
    • Deviated Septum: Structural problems in the nose may increase the risk of bleeding.
    • High Blood Pressure: Can sometimes contribute to frequent nosebleeds.
  1. Symptoms of Recurrent Nosebleeds:
    • Frequent bleeding from one or both nostrils
    • Blood flowing from the nose or down the throat
    • Nasal dryness or irritation
    • Dizziness or weakness in severe cases
    • Crusting inside the nose
  2. Diagnosis:
    • Physical examination of the nasal passages
    • Nasal endoscopy to identify the bleeding source
    • Blood pressure and blood tests if necessary
    • Imaging tests if structural problems are suspected
  3. Treatment Options:
    • Nasal Moisturizers: Saline sprays or gels to keep the nasal lining moist.
    • Medications: Treatment for allergies, infections, or underlying conditions.
    • Cauterization: Sealing the bleeding blood vessel using heat or chemicals.
    • Nasal Packing: In severe cases, packing may be used to control bleeding.
  4. Prevention and Care:
    • Keep the nasal passages moist with saline sprays
    • Avoid nose picking or excessive nose blowing
    • Use humidifiers in dry environments
    • Control allergies and infections promptly
    • Consult an ENT specialist if nosebleeds occur frequently
